for the Home Chef

About Berwick Street Kitchen

Berwick Street Kitchen offers hands-on, casual cooking classes for the home chef taught by cooking expert and home chef Susan Dearing in her home kitchen in West Los Angeles. Her classes are designed for every kind of cook, from beginners through more advanced home chefs. Susan’s classes feature seasonal ingredients and focus on learning the cooking techniques that will ensure success in the kitchen. There are also occasional guest instructors for some of the classes.

Classes generally run 3-4 hours and all classes are hands-on, so participants truly learn by doing. Participants are also given a complete set of recipes from each cooking class to take home.

About Susan

Susan acquired both her love of cooking and much of her culinary know-how from her mom, Elaine, who was a naturally gifted and very talented gourmet cook. Susan founded Susan’s Gourmet Foods (a specialty food manufacturing company) in 1994, grew the company and then sold it in 2000. She produced a line of dessert sauces and condiments from original recipes, which were sold in gourmet markets and specialty food stores in 25 states. When Susan created her first product line, she honored her mom by naming the line Susan Elaine’s. Her signature Incredibly Decadent Bittersweet Chocolate Fudge dessert sauce received various industry awards, including Finalist for the Specialty Food Association's annual Product Award Competition, and was featured in Bon Appétit magazine and the San Francisco Chronicle.

In addition, Susan has taught several home chef cooking classes, and served as an instructor at Laguna Culinary Arts cooking school in Laguna Beach, California. She has taken numerous classes at various cooking schools, including the Cordon Bleu in London. She was also co-director of The Culinary Traveler, which offered an annual one-week culinary tour of the northern coastal region of Brittany, France and included staying at a private chateau.

In 2019 Susan published her first cookbook So Good! Recipes Worth Sharing, a collection of recipes that she has made over the years for family and friends (see the “Buy Susan’s Cookbook” tab on the home page of this website for more details).

Currently, Susan enjoys teaching an occasional home chef cooking class from her home in West Los Angeles.
